The Burghers of Calais: a statue moved by its humanity

The story behind the sculpture
Visit 1347, During the Hundred Years' War, the King of England Edward III laid siege to Calais. After 11 months of resistance, the starving town surrendered. The King demanded that six bourgeois (notable citizens) give themselves up in sacrifice, barefoot and with the rope around their necks, to spare the population. Eustache de Saint-Pierre and five other volunteers accepted this fate. Their courage moved the Queen of England, Philippa de Hainaut, who obtains their pardon.
A revolutionary work of art
Rodin breaks with traditional heroic representations by showing the six men vulnerable, exhausted and resigned, but dignified. The statue, inaugurated in 1895, is installed in front of the’town hall de Calais, on the place du Soldat-Inconnu. A must-see if you want to understand the soul of the city.
